VW may be forced to recall 124,000 electric/hybrid cars due to presence of cadmium
In a recent announcement, German automaker Volkswagen (VW) has revealed that it may have to issue a recall of 124,000 electric and hybrid cars, because a carcinogenic metal -- cadmium -- has been used in battery chargers for VW vehicles. The announcement marks an official confirmation of a report which was recently published in the Wirtschaftswoche weekly.
In the recall-related announcement, a Volkswagen group spokesman said: “Clarification is under way for a recall order by Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority.”
The impending recall of 124,000 electric and hybrid cars by Volkswagen is apparently rooted in the fact that the use of cadmium has been banned in most types of car components, though the metal is used in TVs and other electrical appliances.
However, despite the mentioned ban, a batch of battery chargers which contained cadmium was delivered to Volkswagen by an unidentified supplier. That batch of battery chargers has been installed in some units of electric and hybrid cars manufactured under the Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche brands during the period between 2013 and June 2018.
The issue was evidently detected by Volkswagen a few weeks back, and the automaker informed the authorities on July 20, 2018, that the battery chargers of the affected electric and hybrid cars contain 0.008 grams of cadmium. The automaker has also asserted alongside that the affected cars pose no immediate danger to drivers.
