South Korean tire maker Hankook unveils second-gen tires designed for EVs
South Korean tire manufacturer Hankook Tire Manufacturing Company unveiled its new tires for electric vehicles (EVs) on Monday. The new tires -- called the Kinergy AS EV tires -- mark the second generation of tires which Hankook has designed for EVs.
Hankook is the seventh-biggest tire maker in the world, by sales. In unveiling its new Kinergy AS EV tires, the company said that it plans to commence the sales of the tires from September 2018.
Describing the Kinergy AS EV tires as a durable and “high fuel efficiency” product, Hankook said that it has used an aramid hybrid material for the tires to increase their durability and reduce depreciation of the treads.
In addition, for increased fuel economy with the new tires, Hankook has used low resistance rubbers made for EVs, so that the drag produced by the tires is lower than that of conventional treads. The tires also boast the use of several compounds which give the drivers more vehicle control in bad weather conditions, and ensure minimal road noise but optimum brake application.
Highlighting the need for customized tires for EVs for maximum performance, a source at Hankook said that the company’s new Kinergy AS EV tires are “capable of delivering comfortable, high-speed driving characteristics.”
