Sono Motors plans to build solar electric car with up to 18-mile daily range
European electric-car startup Sono Motors has recently revealed its plans to manufacture a solar electric car which will be capable of providing a daily range of 18 miles.
Sharing some pertinent information about its business model for the planned solar electric car, Sono Motors said that the car -- called Sono Sion -- will be covered in solar cells, and will be priced at approximately $25,000. The car will be slightly shorter than the Chevy Bolt EV.
The Sion solar electric car is apparently scheduled for unveiling by Sono Motors at the end of 2019.
According to the details shared by Sono Motors’ co-founder and CEO Laurin Hahn during a recent video interview with Cleantechnica.com, the Sion solar electric car will be built with polycarbonate plastic body panels placed over an aluminum space frame.
Hahn also revealed that the Sion will be equipped with a 35-kwh battery, and a CCS fast-charge port; and will have a 155-mile range. The solar panels which will cover the roof and sides of the car will provide up to 18 miles of daily travel in the summertime, and around 3 miles of daily travel during winters.
Hahn further added that the Sion solar electric car will come with automatic emergency braking and other important safety features, in order to earn a four-star rating on the Euro NCAP safety tests.
