Sales of gas-powered two-wheelers decline in Europe as electric two-wheeler sales increase
According to latest figures, sales of gas-powered scooters and motorcycles are on the decline in Europe, apparently due to the increasing popularity of electric two-wheelers.
The most recent figures have revealed that a plunge of 6.1% year-on-year was recorded for the sales of gas-powered two-wheelers in Europe during the January-March quarter of 2018.
The biggest drop in sales during the mentioned quarter was recorded for under-50cc gas-powered scooters and mopeds, which plunged 40.2% year-on-year during the quarter. In France, which is the biggest market for mopeds in Europe, the sales drop was as much as 41.5%.
Evidently, the most significant factor leading to the plunge in the sales of gas-powered scooters, mopeds and motorcycles in Europe in the January-March 2018 quarter was a coincident increase in the sales of electric scooters. The sales and registrations of electric two wheelers during the quarter witnessed a substantial increase of 51.2%; with large electric motorcycles -- which are categorised separately -- particularly recording a whopping 118.5% sales increase.
Overall, despite the fact that the total sales volume of electric two-wheelers in Europe is still fairly low as compared to gas-powered two wheelers, latest sales trends clearly indicate that electric two-wheelers are catching up with their ICE-powered counterparts.
