NYC to rely on e-bikes during temporary closure of part of subway in early 2019
With a section of New York City’s subway system to be closed temporarily in early 2019, the city will apparently depend on electric bicycles (e-bikes) to help commuters cope with the closure.
With effect from January 2019, a section of the NYC subway system which carries nearly 275,000 daily commuters will be closed for a period of 15 months. The section scheduled for closure is the western portion of the L train, and marks an important route which crosses between Brooklyn and Manhattan.
According to a statement released by MTA, nearly 195,000 daily commuters who use the ‘scheduled for closure’ section of the subway will be able to divert to other subway lines during the closure. However, 80,000 daily commuters will need some other way to get in and out of Manhattan.
Despite the fact that shuttle buses and other means of transport will comprise a major chunk of the solution, NYC will also depend on a new fleet of e-bikes from the Citi Bike bicycle share program to facilitate New Yorkers to travel back and forth between their home and workplace.
To ease the upcoming commuting crisis due to the subway closure, Citi Bike is already adding 1,250 pedal bicycles and 2,500 docking points. In addition, Citi Bike also has efforts underway to launch 1,000 more e-bikes for the convenience of daily commuters affected by the closure.
