BYD opens ‘largest in the world’ battery factory in China
Chinese EV manufacturer BYD has recently announced that it is opening a new battery factory in the Qinghai province in western China. The move by BYD to open a new battery factory underscores an effort by the automaker to ensure a secure supply of batteries, in the wake of the potential increase in the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in the future. BYD produces prismatic LiFePO4 battery cells, which are different from the NCA and NMC battery cells mostly used by the auto industry.
The opening ceremony of BYD’s new battery factory in Qinghai was held earlier this week. The factory is still under construction, with BYD evidently targeting its completion by the end of 2019.
According to BYD, the company’s new Qinghai battery factory will be “the largest in the world.” The factory has a battery production capacity of 24 GWh, and would give BYD the ability to substantially increase production, with a total battery production capacity of 60 GWh.
With the new Qinghai battery factory marking an evident attempt by BYD to push harder towards battery production for supporting its several EV efforts, the automaker is targeting an output of 105 GWh of battery cells and 150 GWh of battery packs once the construction of the factory gets completed.
