The Boring Co. will build high-speed transit tunnel in Chicago
In an earlier-this-week disclosure, the office of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has confirmed that California-based tunneling startup The Boring Company -- owned by Elon Musk -- has won the bid for the Chicago-O’Hare high-speed tunnel project.
The confirmation of the selection of The Boring Company for building the high-speed transit tunnel in Chicago has come from the Mayor’s office nearly three months after the startup was selected as one of the finalists in the bid for the project.
The Boring Company has finally been selected by the city of Chicago for the high-speed tunnel project over a number of competitors, which included the O’Hare Xpress LLC consortium, which was the other significant finalist.
Despite the fact that the project specifics for the high-speed transit system -- for connecting the O’Hare International Airport with downtown Chicago -- have not yet been officially revealed by The Boring Company, it is being speculated that the company will construct underground high-speed tunnels for the proposed transit system.
The high-speed transit system will notably reduce the traveling time between the airport and downtown Chicago, and will be a part of the airport’s $8.5 billion overhaul. Going by The Boring Company’s estimates, the cost of the high-speed tunnel project is not likely to exceed $1 billion.
