BMW announces new expansion of China battery factory to support iX3 production

In a move which will enable BMW to support the production of its new iX3 electric SUV, the German automaker has recently announced a new expansion of its battery factory in China.

The battery factory was launched by BMW in China in 2017, under the automaker’s ‘BMW Brilliance Automotive’ Joint Venture (BBA).

Announcing the new expansion of its battery factory in China, BMW said that the move is expected to lead to a ‘major increase in capacity’ at the factory, for supporting the iX3 electric SUV production. The SUV was unveiled by the automaker earlier in 2018, and is scheduled to go into production at the automaker’s BBA plant in Dadong, which is close to the new battery factory.

According to BMW’s announcement, the new expansion of the battery factory will pave the way for the production of “new, more powerful batteries of the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology.” The batteries, as per the automaker, will be used for “the fully-electric BMW iX3.”

Asserting that, with the new expansion, BMW is breaking ground for the next stage of its electric model offensive, Oliver Zipse -- BMW AG’s Board of Management member responsible for Production -- said in the announcement that the expansion further increases the capacity of BMW’s battery production in China, and also enables the automaker “to follow the increasing demand for electro mobility in China.”
