BMW: All-electric iX3 will be a China-built SUV, to be exported worldwide
According to a recent confirmation by German automaker BMW, the company’s new forthcoming all-electric iX3 SUV, which was unveiled earlier in 2018, will be a China-manufactured vehicle that will be exported to other markets.
The disclosure related to the production of the iX3 was made recently by Harald Kruger -- Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG -- in coincidence with the automaker’s expansion of the joint venture called BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) in China.
Confirming that BBA will produce the all-electric BMW iX3 “from 2020,” Kruger said that the vehicle “will find customers around the world.” He also added that the BBA expansion move will potentially take the joint venture “beyond our existing motto – in China, for China.”
Along with revealing that the iX3 SUV will be a China-produced vehicle, BMW has also shared some details about its June-announced battery supply contract with Chinese battery-cell manufacturer CATL. The contract will essentially ensure the supply of batteries for BMW’s future electric vehicles.
As per the information shared by BMW, the value of its battery supply contract with CATL will be more than one billion Euros ($1.16 billion). Moreover, reports have revealed that, as a part of the contract, CATL will also build a new factory in Europe, most likely in Germany.
